
Researchers from Siberian Federal University (SFU) and Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU) have developed a new method for detecting low but hazardous concentrations of lead in tissues. The technique relies on silica‑based sorbents and composite materials made from iron oxides. This approach will enable more accurate identification of lead poisoning, particularly in the liver and kidneys, where lead tends to accumulate most frequently.
As explained by Vladimir Losev, Doctor of Chemical Sciences and leading researcher at SFU’s Laboratory of Physicochemistry of Metallurgical Processes and Materials, existing highly sensitive methods — such as electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry — do not always effectively detect such small doses. The new technique is cost‑efficient, does not require expensive equipment, and is suitable for environmental biomonitoring as well as clinical, hygienic, and toxicological studies.
The work was carried out under a state order from the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation and MSU. Lead is known to affect the hematopoietic, nervous, cardiovascular, and digestive systems even when its concentration in the environment is only slightly elevated. The new method will allow for faster and more affordable diagnosis of chronic lead poisoning.
“Scientists from Siberian Federal University and Moscow State University have developed a novel sorption‑based method to isolate and detect low doses of lead in phosphate buffer solutions. It will help to more precisely determine trace levels of heavy metals in the tissues of living organisms. The technique is economical, doesn’t require costly equipment, and can be used for environmental biomonitoring, as well as clinical‑hygienic, toxicological, and ecological studies,” the researcher noted.
