
NASA’s Curiosity rover has discovered a large field of honeycomb-like polygonal patterns in a Martian valley called Valle Grande. The polygonal fractures measure about 1.5 to 3 inches (4 to 8 centimeters) across and extend as far as the rover’s instruments could see, even wrapping around the base of a nearby hill nicknamed Miraflores. While Curiosity has encountered geometric patterns before, this concentration was surprising. Scientists are now analyzing both the shapes and chemical composition of the formations to determine their origin. Several geological processes could be responsible: they might have formed as ancient mud cracks due to wet-dry cycles, resulted from repeated warming and cooling cycles that fractured the rock, or occurred when buried sediments were compressed and water was squeezed out over time. Understanding how these features formed could provide valuable insights into Mars’ environmental history and the potential for past habitability.
