European nations plan to drop threats to boycott tournaments organized by the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) but are discussing other forms of protest against the organization’s current president, Gianni Infantino, Sky News reports.
Previously, the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), and the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) accused Infantino of deception regarding the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) project. Following UEFA’s threat to boycott FIFA tournaments—including the World Cup—Infantino announced that the federation had abandoned plans to sell off a portion of its commercial rights. UEFA later stated that the conditions for calling off the boycott had not yet been met.
According to a source, UEFA has received assurances that projects similar to FFE will not be possible in the future. These guarantees are set to be discussed at meetings in Monaco on Thursday.
The next FIFA-sanctioned tournament that could be subject to a boycott is the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland, which kicks off next week. The next major tournament is the Women’s World Cup in June 2027.
