In the United States, three men were accused of stealing $129 million from thousands of companies around the world using artificial intelligence. According to prosecutors, the attackers used AI to imitate the voices and images of executives and lawyers. The Guardian reported this on November 7.
The criminal scheme operated for more than a year and a half. Among the victims were hospitals, banks, investment funds, fintech companies and even a pet food manufacturer. One of the British fintech startups lost about $11.6 million as a result of fraudsters.
The scammers acted in stages: first, an email was sent to a company employee allegedly from the CEO with a request to conduct a confidential financial transaction.
The criminals would then join the call using an AI-generated voice or video image of the executive to convince the victim to transfer funds.
