
A further phase of the “Splanchnic” medical study, which investigates the effects of weightlessness on the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract, has been carried out aboard the International Space Station. This was announced by the station’s commander, cosmonaut Sergey Kud-Sverchkov, who is serving as a special TASS correspondent in orbit.
The research takes place within the Russian segment of the station and aims to scrutinize the alterations in structure and function across various parts of the digestive system during extended stays in space. The information gathered during the flight is subsequently juxtaposed with the findings from medical check-ups conducted prior to the crew’s launch into orbit.
Diagnostic procedures on the station employ equipment for electrogastroenterography and a portable ultrasound diagnostic machine. The cosmonauts undergo specialized training that equips them to independently operate the medical apparatus and conduct the requisite examinations right there on board the station.
