Guests at outdoor Independence Day events in downtown Washington are being urged to evacuate and seek shelter as a storm approaches, organizers have announced.
According to an RIA Novosti correspondent, the sky above Washington has become overcast with thick clouds, lightning is flashing, and the wind is picking up.
“Due to the approaching storm, attendees are requested to leave the event area and take refuge in the nearest building,” the event’s organizing committee urged.
Those celebrating can find shelter in nearby government ministry and agency buildings.
“Do not take cover under trees,” the Secret Service cautioned in a safety alert it issued.
Organizers have promised to provide updates on the resumption of the program and the reopening of entry points.
The White House earlier confirmed that U.S. President Donald Trump was scheduled to speak in the evening, followed by a fireworks display.
