These two sides faced each other for only the second time in World Cup history. Their first encounter was during the group stage of the 1966 tournament, which ended in a 2:1 win for Argentina.
Spain won the World Cup for the second time. Their first title came in 2010, when they beat the Netherlands 1:0 after extra time in the final. This was only Spain’s second appearance in a World Cup final. With this victory, Spain matched the number of titles held by France and Uruguay. They are still behind Brazil (5), Germany and Italy (4 each), and Argentina (3).
For Argentina, this was their seventh World Cup final appearance. In these decisive matches, they have won three times (1978, 1986, 2022) and suffered four defeats (1930, 1990, 2014, 2026). In terms of final losses, Argentina has surpassed the Netherlands (1974, 1978, 2010) and tied with Germany (1966, 1982, 1986, 2002).
