
Surgeons at Sechenov University have performed a fully robotic coronary artery bypass grafting for the first time. This was reported to Life.ru by the university’s press office.
The patient was initially scheduled for surgery to remove an atherosclerotic plaque from the brachiocephalic artery. However, during the examination, doctors discovered restenosis in a previously placed stent. The team decided to forego the traditional open-chest procedure and opted for a less invasive treatment approach.
The operation was carried out using the Da Vinci robotic system. All manipulations were performed through five small punctures, without any incision in the sternum.
Sechenov University has been performing robot-assisted coronary artery bypass grafting since 2024. Previously, a hybrid technique was used: part of the procedure was done by the robot, while the bypass was completed through a small incision. This time, the entire process was conducted robotically.
As noted by Sechenov University, the advancement of such technologies helps reduce surgical trauma and accelerate patient recovery after heart operations.
