The third norovirus outbreak since May has struck passengers aboard the expedition cruise ship National Geographic Sea Bird off the coast of Alaska.
A norovirus outbreak has occurred on the expedition cruise vessel National Geographic Sea Bird near Alaska’s shores, reports RIA Novosti. The illness has affected 18 passengers.
“An outbreak of gastrointestinal illness is happening on an Alaska-based expedition ship: a third of passengers are suffering from the virus, marking the third such incident aboard the vessel since late May… Of the 62 passengers, 18 are experiencing sudden acute digestive distress, with symptoms including ‘nausea and abdominal cramps,'” notes the New York Post.
The illness was reported on July 12, two days after the ship departed from the port of Sitka. The source of the infection has not yet been identified, affected individuals are in isolation, and disinfection procedures are underway on the vessel.
This represents the third outbreak of norovirus on the same ship since late May. The first occurred from May 26 to 31, when nine passengers and three crew members fell ill. The second outbreak was recorded from June 25 to 30, affecting 20 people out of the 95 on board.
