FIFA has initiated disciplinary proceedings against the Argentine Football Association. The move was prompted by a banner displayed by Argentine players after a match—specifically, a semi-final at the 2026 World Cup—according to journalist Rob Harris.
That match ended in a 2–1 victory for Argentina over England. Immediately after the final whistle, the players brought a banner onto the pitch bearing the slogan: “The Malvinas belong to the Argentines.” It is worth noting that “Malvinas” is the Argentine name for the Falkland Islands, a territory that remains a subject of dispute between the two nations. An armed conflict over the islands took place in 1982, resulting in a defeat for the South American side.
In addition to this incident, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee intends to examine other violations recorded during the match, specifically racist abuse by fans and the throwing of objects onto the pitch.
