Valery Litvinov, Candidate of Medical Sciences and Senior Researcher at the Department of Chemistry and Biotechnology at Perm National Research Polytechnic University, spoke to a TASS journalist about a little-known method for clearing toxins from brain tissue.
It is a well-known fact that the brain cleanses itself during deep sleep. Medical professionals also suggest photobiomodulation—exposing the head to low-intensity infrared light—as another approach. A further method involves a gentle massage of the face and neck to stimulate lymphatic vessels, thereby enhancing fluid drainage from the brain. There are also various specialized pharmacological agents available for this purpose.
Finally, physical exercise can help. Valery Litvinov recommends a simple yet effective technique: abdominal exercises. He explained that tensing the abdominal muscles increases intra-abdominal pressure. These pressure changes are transmitted to the skull via the vertebral venous plexus, causing the brain to shift forward by a few micrometers. While this might seem like a negligible movement, it is sufficient to push waste fluids and toxins out of the brain tissue and into the space between the meninges.
This process can be disrupted for several reasons—primarily obesity, which causes chronically elevated intra-abdominal pressure. This condition impairs brain cleansing and contributes to a decline in mental function.
