Researchers at the University of Minnesota completed a first-in-human clinical trial using CRISPR/Cas9 to modify tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs). They deactivated the CISH gene, which previously hindered T cells from recognizing cancer cells. The treatment was generally safe, and several patients saw halted tumor growth, with one achieving a complete response lasting over two years. This permanent genetic edit could revolutionize immunotherapy for hard-to-treat cancers.
