Dr. Jose Hernandez Poveda stated that a deficiency in muscle mass accelerates a person’s demise considerably more rapidly than smoking does. This information was reported by ABC.
According to him, individuals with diminished muscle strength face a 250% greater risk of mortality compared to those who are physically fit, a figure that actually surpasses the risk associated with tobacco use.
“When you observe an elderly individual who struggles to rise from a chair, appears unsteady, and is incapable of performing tasks independently, the reason is not their age but rather a lack of muscularity,” Poveda pointed out.
He further highlighted that muscles play a crucial role in regulating blood sugar levels, enhancing insulin sensitivity, contributing to bone protection, maintaining hormonal equilibrium, and acting as a reservoir of amino acids during illness, which is vital for recovery.
