
Portuguese international and AC Milan forward Rafael Leão was shown a straight red card in the first half of a friendly match after punching Chilean player Iván Román in the face.
The friendly encounter between Portugal and Chile is taking place on Saturday in Oeiras, Portugal. During added time in the first half, a brawl involving players from both national teams, including substitutes, erupted on the Chilean side of the field following a challenge.
During the scuffle, Leão struck defender Iván Román in the face with his fist, causing Román to fall to the ground. The player remained on the field, covering his eye area with his hand, and soon after received medical attention. Italian referee Luca Zufferli subsequently issued red cards to both Leão and Román.
The score at halftime was 0-0. Earlier, the 26-year-old Leão had been named to Portugal’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is set to be held in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
