The SpaceX Cargo Dragon, a freight spacecraft, has successfully detached from the International Space Station (ISS) as part of its 34th commercial resupply mission to the orbital outpost. The undocking occurred autonomously on June 16th, and splashdown off the coast of California is anticipated to take place approximately 15 hours after separation.
Having been docked with the ISS since May 17th, the spacecraft is now returning scientific research findings to Earth. Among the most significant items being brought back are cartilage tissue samples cultivated using a 3D bioprinter in microgravity conditions, along with materials pertaining to experiments focused on cancer research.
Cargo Dragon remains the sole operational cargo vehicle capable of routinely transporting scientific samples from orbit back to our planet. Other spacecraft, upon mission completion, are incinerated in the atmosphere along with the waste they carry away from the International Space Station.
