Spanish footballers Gavi and Fabian Ruiz were welcomed in their hometown of Los Palacios y Villafranca after their World Cup victory and were awarded tomatoes equal to their weight, reported the newspaper Vanguardia.
“Local residents honored both footballers at the city hall and presented them with one of the municipality’s most traditional awards – a quantity of tomatoes equal to their own weight,” the statement says.
According to the publication, during the ceremony both footballers were weighed to determine the mass of tomatoes they would receive. This tradition, known as the “red candy,” is one way the municipality honors outstanding athletes.
Gavi and Ruiz were greeted by hundreds of local residents. The ceremony also featured footballer Jesús Navas, a native of the city and a World Cup champion.
The Spanish national team played in the World Cup final for the second time and achieved a second victory. The “Red Fury” first won the gold in 2010.
