Within the code of iOS 27 beta, new features have been uncovered that may form part of Apple’s upcoming device rental program, Apple Upgrade. According to 9to5Mac, the company is exploring the possibility of limiting the functionality of rented iPhones in the event of missed payments.
Earlier, Bloomberg columnist Mark Gurman stated that Apple could introduce the Apple Upgrade service in the United States as early as late July. The program is expected to involve a long-term subscription model for iPhones and other Apple devices.
Based on data found within the iOS 27 code, if payment terms are violated, the device could automatically switch to Restricted Mode. In this mode, users would only have access to essential system applications, such as Phone and Settings, while access to other programs would be blocked.
Additionally, developers have identified a feature called Partner Finance Lock, designed to protect rented devices. It is believed to prevent users from erasing data, preparing the smartphone for resale, or disassembling it until all financial obligations are met. This mechanism is integrated with the Find My service and does not involve sharing the device’s location data with third parties.
