
Regular visits to cinemas, museums, and theaters are linked to a slowing of biological aging: older adults appear roughly three years younger than their less culturally active peers. Researchers measured the degree of physical wear and tear in each individual and found that regular participation in cultural activities is associated with a younger physiological age. The study’s findings were published in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health.
Physiological age is a more reliable indicator of disease and mortality risk than chronological age—the number of years since birth. This makes measures that slow physiological aging particularly valuable. We are talking about everyday activities that are already accessible to many people, such as going to the movies or visiting an art gallery or a concert.
The concept of physiological age implies that two people born on the same day can be in vastly different physical condition. The body ages and wears down at its own pace. One 70-year-old might have the arteries, lungs, and muscles of a much younger person, while another might appear far younger than their actual age.
The research team drew on data from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA), which has been tracking the health of adults aged 50 and older in England since 2002. Using data from three survey waves conducted between 2004 and 2009, the researchers gathered ten health indicators and combined them into a single age-related score.
They measured blood pressure and arterial stiffness, lung function (specifically the force of exhalation), blood sugar and cholesterol levels, body mass, grip strength, and walking speed. Since each of these indicators changes in a predictable way with age, collectively they provide a more comprehensive picture than any single test could. Professor Yusuke Matsuyama of Science Tokyo and his colleagues compared this data with each individual’s level of cultural engagement. The contrast was striking. People who attended the theater once every few months or more frequently had an average physiological age of around 67, compared to nearly 70 for those who attended rarely—a difference of approximately three years.
A three-year gap is impressive, but there is an obvious catch. People who visit galleries and attend concerts tend to be wealthier, healthier, and more mobile to begin with.
Some of these differences reflect the characteristics of the participants rather than any impact of the outings themselves. To get closer to identifying the cause, Matsuyama’s team employed a method not previously applied to this issue.
Instead of comparing different individuals, a fixed-effects analysis tracks the same person over time to see if their physiological age changes as their cultural habits shift. This model accounts for traits that remain constant, such as genetics and upbringing.
The task remained to establish a link within the individual between going out and their body’s estimated age. This connection persisted even under more rigorous scrutiny. Participants most actively engaged in cultural life had a physiological age just over a year lower than those least engaged.
The effect was modest because the method focuses on changes over time. However, looking ahead, the researchers found that an individual’s level of engagement predicted their physiological age four years later.
It is unclear why attending the theater leaves measurable traces on the body, and the study cannot prove causation. The authors suggest several plausible mechanisms, each supported by earlier research. Going out often involves social interaction. A study of adults in the UK found that frequent cultural activity is linked to a lower risk of loneliness a decade later.
Isolation is one of the strongest predictors of health decline in old age. Cultural activities can also encourage people to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Studies in low-income areas have shown that people who engaged in the arts were more likely to eat a healthy diet and lead an active life. These habits, in turn, affect blood pressure and weight. Mood can also play a role.
Cultural engagement is linked to lower rates of depression and psychological distress. Chronic stress is believed to accelerate physiological aging by weakening the immune and hormonal systems.
One study tracked older adults over a ten-year period. Attending museums, concerts, or the theater once or twice a year was associated with a lower risk of developing depression.
This protective effect grew stronger the more often people left their homes. Of course, none of this rules out other the simple possibility that healthy people find it easier to leave the house. The fixed-effects method narrows this gap without eliminating it entirely, and the authors cautiously note that the result could be either positive or negative.
This study adds a clearer chain of evidence. Earlier work based on the same English survey had already linked the arts to increased longevity. An analysis spanning 14 years showed that people who participated in cultural activities—even infrequently—were less likely to die during the follow-up period.
Cultural activities may help slow biological aging, even after researchers account for stable personality traits. Because cultural engagement can change over time, it offers the public health sector a practical and accessible target for intervention.
Cheaper tickets, better transport links to venues, and community programs for isolated older adults could expand access. The researchers suggest that the benefits may be comparable to those associated with regular physical activity.
