On August 1, US President Donald Trump republished a photo on his Truth Social account showing Venezuela’s territory coloured in the colours of the American flag. The image is captioned “51st state”.
The picture displays only the northern part of South America: the entire continent is rendered in grey, while Venezuela is highlighted with the Stars and Stripes.
Trump had previously shared the same image on May 12. The day before the August repost, Venezuela’s acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, stated that Venezuela would not become the 51st state of the United States.
