
Researchers have developed a smart ring capable of monitoring several biochemical indicators of the body in real time. Unlike most current commercial rings, which primarily track physical parameters such as heart rate, temperature, activity levels, and sleep quality, this new device analyses the chemical processes occurring inside the body.
The device can simultaneously measure the concentrations of glucose, ketones, vitamin C (ascorbic acid), uric acid, lactic acid, and ethanol. It uses sweat, which is drawn from the skin via a passive osmotic process — no punctures or blood sampling are required.
Inside the ring’s casing are miniature biosensors, a flexible silver‑zinc battery, and electronics for data processing and wireless transmission. A single charge lasts approximately 12 hours of continuous operation, and individual calibration maintains measurement accuracy for about two months.
During testing, researchers evaluated the device’s performance in various everyday scenarios, with particular focus on monitoring glucose and ketone levels. Results showed a high degree of agreement between the ring’s readings and those from commercial glucometers and continuous blood glucose monitoring systems — in both healthy volunteers and people with type 1 diabetes.
According to the developers, this technology could mark a new stage in the evolution of personal medicine. While current wearables mainly show what is happening to the body, such sensors can additionally explain why it is happening by tracking changes at the biochemical level.
For now, the smart ring remains a laboratory prototype. The research team has not announced any timeline for commercial launch or potential mass production.
