US authorities have confirmed a series of cyber incidents targeting critical infrastructure. Following reports of breaches in Minnesota, the state of Michigan also disclosed instances of unauthorised access to its water treatment facilities.
According to the FBI, similar incidents have been recorded in at least seven states. The day before, federal agencies had warned that Iranian hackers were stepping up attempts to infiltrate control systems for water and sewage networks.
Despite this, Donald Trump blamed the attacks on the Democratic authorities in Minnesota, while the state’s governor, Tim Walz, directly accused Tehran. Officials from the affected regions assured the public that all systems continued to operate safely.
