Researchers have shed new light on a shipwreck discovered off the coast of Sweden in 2024. Polish divers from the Baltictech expedition initially found what appeared to be old bottles, but an archaeologist identified a clay vessel stamped with “Nassau”. Further investigation revealed the ship likely sank in 1856–1857 while sailing from Hamburg to St. Petersburg. The cargo included luxury items like Louis Roederer champagne, Selters mineral water (which bore the Nassau seal between 1836 and 1866), ceramics (including Villeroy & Boch products), scientific instruments, and rare meteorites. Historians believe this was a diplomatic gesture: the Duke of Nassau sent these gifts to Emperor Alexander II as a symbol of goodwill following the Crimean War, aiming to restore diplomatic and trade ties after the British lifted their Baltic blockade. The team is now seeking permission from Swedish authorities to conduct another expedition, with hopes of recovering the meteorites, which may still be intact in reinforced crates beneath the bottles
