The organization stated that the VAR system should have recommended that the referee review the contentious moment on the pitchside monitor.
Pro Ref determined that Enzo Fernández did not touch the ball, meaning the assessment of a potential offside in the incident remained subjective. However, officials concluded that VAR failed to consider the implications of the player’s positioning and should have initiated an on-field review.
Following the match, Pro Ref representatives contacted Manchester United to acknowledge the error in judgment. The organization also announced that an investigation into the incident is underway, according to the BBC.
Haaland’s goal was scored in the 60th minute of the match. Manchester City ultimately defeated Manchester United 1–0.
