A shark attacked a woman in the Bahamas, causing serious injuries to her right ankle, People reports, citing the Bahamas police. The incident took place off the coast of North Bimini Island on September 14.
According to the report, the victim was a 37-year-old Australian woman who had gone on a dolphin excursion. The shark attack occurred three nautical miles (approximately 5.5 km) offshore.
The tourist was initially taken to a local hospital in Bimini and subsequently airlifted to a medical facility on another island, New Providence.
About 40 shark species inhabit the waters of the Bahamas, including hammerheads, oceanic whitetips, and bull sharks. The most common species is the Caribbean reef shark; these sharks reach lengths of up to 9 feet (2.7 m) and weigh up to 155 pounds (70 kg).
