Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez reacted in an unusual way to the idea of closer ties between Canada and the European Union. On the social network X, he posted an image of the EU flag featuring a red maple leaf—Canada’s national symbol—alongside the familiar stars.

The Spanish leader did not include any accompanying commentary with the post. However, the image appeared shortly after discussions regarding a proposal for Canada to potentially gain “associate partner” status with the European Union.
The initiative was put forward by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. She proposed expanding cooperation between Brussels and Ottawa in areas such as the economy, energy, defense, technology, and critical resources. The proposal does not entail Canada becoming a full member of the EU. Currently, the two sides cooperate under the CETA trade agreement, whereas the new format envisions a closer partnership.
Life.ru previously reported that Donald Trump criticized the idea of Canada becoming an associate member of the European Union. The American leader stated that such a move could impact US trade relations with Europe. Brussels, meanwhile, believes that the new cooperation format with Ottawa would strengthen ties in strategically important sectors.
