Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo scored a goal in the second round of the group stage at the 2026 World Cup against Uzbekistan’s national team. With this strike, he surpassed seven players on the tournament’s all-time scoring list, including Diego Maradona, who won the 1986 World Cup with Argentina.
This goal was Ronaldo’s ninth at World Cups. In addition to Maradona, he also overtook Brazilian star Neymar, who was named to his country’s squad for the tournament.
Ronaldo now joins the group of 27 players who have scored at least nine goals in World Cup history. On the tournament’s scoring chart, he has matched the achievement of fellow Portuguese Eusébio, tying the national team’s all-time record in this category.
At 41 years old, Ronaldo is a five-time Champions League winner, a European champion, and a two-time Nations League winner. He holds records for the most goals scored in international football, European Championships, Champions League, and Club World Cups. The forward has been playing for Saudi Arabia’s Al-Nassr since December 2022, and throughout his career, he has also played for Portugal’s Sporting, England’s Manchester United, Italy’s Juventus, and Spain’s Real Madrid. Ronaldo has won the Ballon d’Or five times.
