
Scientists have identified a link between frequent television viewing during middle age and signs of accelerated brain aging. The study, published in the journal Alzheimer’s and Dementia, revealed that individuals who spent a significant amount of time watching TV were more likely to exhibit changes associated with deteriorating brain health and an increased risk of cognitive impairment.
The research utilized data from approximately 1,700 adult participants in the long-term American ARIC study. In the late 1980s, these individuals reported how much time they devoted to watching television during their leisure hours. Over two decades later, they underwent MRI scans of their brains to assess its condition.
Analysis showed that participants who watched TV “very frequently” had smaller volumes in certain brain regions compared to those who rarely or never watched television. The most notable changes were observed in areas related to memory, as well as the frontal and occipital lobes.
Additionally, among those who engaged in prolonged TV viewing, there were more frequent instances of damage to the brain’s white matter. Such changes are linked to aging of the nervous system, an elevated risk of stroke, dementia, and a decline in cognitive functions. The most pronounced differences were noted among men.
The connection between frequent TV watching and brain alterations persisted even after accounting for other factors that could influence health, including physical activity levels, smoking, alcohol consumption, diabetes, and body mass index.
Meanwhile, the researchers did not uncover a similar association among individuals who spent a lot of time sitting while working. In this group, on the contrary, some indicators of brain health were on average better. The scientists suggested that the nature of activities might play a key role: intellectual engagement during work could partially offset the consequences of prolonged sitting.
The study’s authors note that these findings do not prove a direct causal relationship between TV viewing and brain deterioration. However, the data indicate that for maintaining cognitive health, it is important to consider not only the duration of sedentary time but also what a person is doing during that period.
