On Tuesday, May 19th, partially consumed remains were discovered in the mountains west of Tokyo. The deceased’s gender and age have not yet been determined. Near the remains, tracks belonging to a large animal were found. Authorities are currently operating under the hypothesis that a bear attacked and consumed the individual, though they have not entirely ruled out the possibility of another type of animal being responsible.
The remains were initially spotted on Thursday, May 14th, by a police officer. He had been hiking in the area during his day off. It took authorities five days to reach the location. The body was situated approximately one hundred meters from an established hiking trail. A backpack and trekking poles were also found in the vicinity. Officials have indicated that local residents have reported sightings of bears on multiple occasions since April.
