Chinese intelligence agencies have discovered turtles and fish in China’s maritime zones that were equipped with sensors transmitting data abroad, according to the Ministry of State Security (MSS) of the PRC.
As reported by the ministry on its social media channels on Friday, in recent years, China’s state security bodies have found that foreign intelligence services are “collecting and stealing sensitive maritime data through various new spy devices.”
“In one of China’s maritime areas, large living marine animals were found with sensors attached to them,” the department stated, specifying that these were “turtles and fish.”
It is noted that these “spy underwater residents” were collecting sensitive real-time data on water temperature, salinity, ocean currents, and other environmental parameters, and then “transmitting the information abroad via satellite communication.”
The MSS also reported instances of discovering other foreign espionage equipment in China’s maritime areas, including surface drones and reconnaissance buoys capable of transmitting data about the marine environment and the activities of warships and submarines to foreign countries.
