A three-year-old boy suffered a severe genital injury on the cruise ship Spectrum of the Seas after a toilet seat fell on him. According to The Standard, the incident occurred in June during a five-day voyage from Shanghai to Incheon (South Korea).
On the first night of the trip, when the child went to the restroom, the seat fell due to intense rocking of the ship at sea. This caused heavy bleeding in the boy’s groin area. The onboard doctor diagnosed a blunt genital injury.
The injured child’s relatives claim the toilet seat was defective and lacked shock absorbers. They also point to the absence of warning signs in the restroom about potential danger, which they assert constitutes a serious breach of safety standards on the vessel. Consequently, the family has filed a lawsuit against the cruise organizers.
Royal Caribbean, the company that owns the ship, denies any liability. The firm states that the toilet seat and lid were inspected and deemed functional. According to the carrier, the seat may have fallen because the boy’s mother accidentally bumped into it. As of the time of publication, legal proceedings are ongoing.
